  Juan de Pareja

  Seville / Rome · 17th century

  Velazquez painted this portrait of Juan de Pareja (c. 1608-1670) in Rome in 1650. Of African and Morisco descent, Pareja was enslaved in the Velazquez studio, later freed, and became an accomplished painter in his own right - a landmark image of a Black European.
